Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncturists use only sterilized, single use, disposable needles that are fine, wire-like, and are made of stainless steel. Acupuncture needles do not cut the skin like standard hollow hypodermic needles. Instead, their cone-shaped points separate the tissues and slip between the cells.
There are minimal adverse effects or risks associated with acupuncture. Acupuncture promotes the body’s ability to heal; it does not add or take anything away from the body. In Alberta, those who are registered to practice acupuncture (R.Ac) are graduates of comprehensive programs and have passed the Registration Exams administered by the Acupuncture Board of Alberta. The Acupuncture Board of Alberta is governed provincially by the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta and is regulated under the Health Disciplines Act.
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a therapeutic treatment that stimulates the body’s ability to heal. It can reduce or eliminate pain and improve overall bodily functioning. Acupuncture is a component of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been practiced for over 3000 years. Acupuncture has proven effective in the treatment of both acute and chronic disorders. Acupuncture stimulates the release of endorphins. Endorphins help to block pain messages and benefit the body by promoting the biochemical restoration of internal regulatory systems. With acupuncture, overall bodily functioning can be improved.
The National Institutes of Health and the World Health Organization recognize acupuncture as an effective treatment for over 50 conditions, including: addiction, arthritis, anxiety, chronic fatigue, colitis, depression, digestive problems, fertility enhancement, fibromyalgia, IBS, menstrual irregularities, pain, sciatica, sleep disturbances and stress.
What does acupuncture feel like?
A variety of sensations – warmth, tingling, dullness, or heaviness – may be experienced when receiving acupuncture treatments. These sensations can occur at the site of insertion or they may be felt a distance from the insertion site. These sensations indicate the movement of energy. This movement of energy can lead to a favorable outcome for treatment. Most patients feel relaxed and comfortable during treatments.
How many treatments are recommended?
The number of treatments varies depending upon the individual and their condition. For acute conditions, only a few treatments may be necessary. For chronic or complex conditions, longer treatment protocols may be recommended.
